Hi, I'm George Lee Sye. I started working in 1974, and like many people, I had early dreams of running my own business. I gave it a shot in the 1980s—but I failed miserably. So I took the safe option and went back into the workforce.
 
Fast forward to 2002, I decided to try again. This time was different. It didn't click straight away, but over time, I worked out what it really takes to survive in business—and it had a lot less to do with talent than I thought.
 
When I relaunched my self-employed career, I honestly believed that being good at what I did would be enough to succeed. I learned very quickly that it wasn't.
I realised something critical: If I couldn't clearly communicate the value of what I offered—and pitch it persuasively—I wouldn't survive.
 
All of my work involved pitching solutions to large corporations. There was no room for fluff or vague messaging. I had to earn their trust, get their attention, and influence their decisions—all in a limited amount of time.
